A lot of freebies have registration forms that request your e-mail address.  My recommendation is that you do not use your primary e-mail address when signing up for these freebies.  Perhaps an even better solution is if you have Gmail you can use your e-mail “+””anything you want” to easily filter out any unwanted e-mails from these sources.  Example, myemail+spam@gmail.com is the e-mail address I might use when filling out a form.  When that company sends me an e-mail, it will still go to my inbox but I will be able to easily recognize that as spam and can create a filter to make sure that future e-mails are handled correctly.
